My name is Sofia Gontcharenko and
I am a young visual artist from Toronto, Canada.
My work is largely inspired by colour and its place in creating emphasis, contrast, value, and movement within my work, something I like to call, "Chromatic Topography".
I’ve been painting for many years now and only recently began sharing my work to the world, hoping to evoke everlasting joy in viewers as they observe not the painting in its entirety, but the small colouring details that make it for what it is.

The Human in Polychrome
A series of portraits exploring the constant movement of a person’s inner world.
At every moment, countless things are happening inside us — thoughts, emotions, memories, sensations, reactions, fears, desires and dreams. Even when a face appears calm or expressionless, the inner world is never still.
Colour is used to make this invisible movement visible. Each portrait becomes a map of a person’s changing inner state, where colours overlap, shift and flow into one another just as thoughts and feelings do.
Human beings are never emotionally monochrome. We are constantly changing, even in the quietest moment.

Colours Melt, So Do People

Here, the boundaries between colours begin to dissolve just as the certainty of the human expression does. Bright yellows, greens, reds, blues, and violets overlap across a distressed face, creating tension between the vitality of the palette and the vulnerability of the subject. "Colours Melt, So Do People" considers the instability of emotion, and how composure can soften, distort, and eventually give away under pressure.

The Human Light Emerges

"The Human Light Emerges" treats luminosity as something originating within the figure rather than falling upon it. Gold, orange and red appear to rise through the face against the surrounding blue and Prussian blue, creating the impression of an internal source of light. Within "The Human Polychrome" series, the painting represents a moment in which something normally concealed, such as emotion, consciousness, vitality, and identity, begin to surface.

Luna Rose

"Luna Rose" explores the coexistence of warmth and coolness within a single human presence. Rosy oranges and yellows move through the face while blues, violets, and turquoise gather around its shadows and contours. These opposing temperatures do not divide the figure. Rather, they construct it. The work presents identity as a constantly shifting balance of contrasting emotional states.

In "Ember Within", the human figure appears almost illuminated from the inside. Fiery oranges and yellows dominate the face, while cooler blues interrupt the warmth around the eyes and shadows. The contrast transforms colour intro a representation of internal intensity, something burning beneath an otherwise controlled expression. Rather than painting a single emotion, the portrait considers the tension between what a person contains internally and what they allow to become visible.

Alias Vivida

"Alias Vivida" considers identity was something layered rather than fixed. Streams of yellow, turquoise, violet, and red move across the face like a second anatomy, replacing conventional skin tones with an emotional topography. The title refers to an "alias", a version of ourselves that is visible to others, while the polychromatic surface suggests the many identities and emotions existing beneath it.

"Still A Pumpkin" asks what remains constant when appearance changes. The objects are recognizable, yet their surfaces contain colours that exceed their expected forms. Blues enter oranges, yellows enter shadows, and reflected hues migrate between neighbouring objects. The title deliberately insists that despite these transformations, the object remains "still a pumpkin". Within "The Human Polychrome", the painting becomes an analogy for human identity. Outward colour, mood, and perception may continuously change without eliminating the underlying self.

Who Eats This?

A rather odd breakfast, isn't it? "Who Eats This?" extends the language of polychrome beyond the face and into an ordinary human ritual, eating. Familiar breakfast foods become strange through exaggerated colour, swirling surfaces and ambiguous forms. The work asks how perception transforms the everyday. Although no person appears in the composition, human presence is implied through the arranged meal, turning the still life into a portrait of appetite, habit, and subjective perception.
